What is CBD Isolate? Wholesale Pricing, Regulations & More

CBD Isolate is a form of cannabidiol, which is a chemical compound present in the cannabis or hemp plant. Unlike other CBD solutions that generally result in a liquid, CBD isolate always comes in the form of a white, crystalline powder. Often referred to as CBD crystalline, CBD Isolates are the most potent CBD products on the market typically offering potency levels of 99%+. The term “isolate” is accurate, because the CBD molecules must be isolated from all other cannabinoids (including THC), so that only CBD remains. Unlike full-spectrum CBD products, CBD Isolate does not contain any THC — the psychoactive component of cannabis or hemp. CBD Isolate is an option for those who want to experience the potential therapeutic effects of CBD without even the smallest trace of THC.

When it comes to CBD (cannabidiol), most products on the market contain a certain percentage of other cannabinoids and plant materials. For example, oils procured from hemp plants generally contain 60-80% CBD, while highly-refined solutions produced through distillation generally contain 90%+ CBD. CBD Isolate takes this purification process a step further.

But what exactly is CBD isolate? What’s the difference between full spectrum CBD and CBD isolate? How are these products regulated? And where can retailers purchase CBD isolate at wholesale prices? We will cover all of this and more in the following sections, but first let’s take a look at the basics of CBD isolate, and the complex distillation process required to produce it.

What is CBD?

CBD (cannabidiol) is one of more than 100 cannabinoids found in the cannabis and hemp plant. It is often used to reduce pain and and manage anxiety, though its potential uses do not stop there. Researchers are actively studying the effects of CBD to determine how best to regulate and administer CBD as a therapeutic drug in the future.

Currently, manufacturers market CBD in various forms, including CBD oils, topicals, pills, and similar products. However, some products merely contain CBD along with many other cannabinoids, while other products are comprised entirely (or almost entirely) of cannabidiol.

What is CBD Isolate?

CBD isolate is the purest form of cannabidiol available, containing >99% pure CBD. In order to produce CBD isolate, the cannabis or hemp solution must undergo a complex distillation process. The term “isolate” is accurate, because the CBD molecules must be isolated from all other cannabinoids (including THC), so that only CBD remains. Unlike other CBD solutions that generally result in a liquid, CBD isolate always comes in the form of a white, crystalline powder.

How is CBD Isolate Made?

In order to make CBD isolate, hemp plants must undergo several forms of

distillation. First, the hemp plant must reach full maturity in order for the chemical compounds to be completely present. Then, oils must be extracted from the plant via a PX1 or PXP system. The resulting solution is known as full spectrum CBD. This solution generally contains all of the cannabinoids that naturally occur in the hemp plant, including both CBD and THC.

Full spectrum CBD must then be distilled in order to produce broad spectrum CBD. With broad spectrum CBD, the solution generally contains 90% or more CBD, with trace amounts of THC (~0.3%), as well as other cannabinoids. The unwanted plant materials are separated and removed using a process known as chromatography.

Once the chromatography phase is complete and CBD has been isolated, the remaining materials must be completely removed so that only the cannabidiol remains. The next phase involves a process known as winterization, which removes excess fats and any remaining plant material using freezing temperatures.

Finally, the resulting solution is heated to convert it into a pure, CBD powder. This phase is known as decarboxylation. As you can see, it is a very complex and involved process to take a hemp plant and convert it to a pure CBD powder, free of any other cannabinoids.

Is CBD Isolate Regulated?

In short, no. The use of CBD isolate has not received official FDA approval. However, CBD was removed from the controlled substances list as part of the Farm Bill in 2018, making it legal to produce and/or distribute nationwide. That said, THC is still a controlled substance, and is not yet legal in many states. Therefore, CBD isolate producers must ensure that their products do not contain any THC, especially if they wish to distribute their CBD products in states where recreational and/or medicinal cannabis is not legal. As a result, CBD products must adhere to certain regulations to ensure that they are actually infused with CBD isolate, rather than THC or other cannabinoids.

Differentiating CBD Isolate Products

CBD can come in many different forms and be produced using different processes. CBD isolate is merely one of three primary forms, along with broad spectrum CBD and full spectrum CBD. So, in order to better understand CBD isolate and how it can be used, let’s look at how these CBD processes differ:

CBD Isolate  vs. Broad Spectrum CBD vs. Full Spectrum CBD

These three terms refer to different methods of CBD extraction. As stated previously, CBD isolate refers to CBD in its purest form. Isolate comes in the form of a powder, and does not contain any other cannabinoids beyond cannabidiol. Naturally, CBD isolate must go through a complex distillation process to ensure that the resulting solution only contains CBD.

Broad spectrum CBD is simply a different name for CBD distillate. In other words, when a cannabinoid oil is the result of “broad spectrum” distillation, it removes one or more cannabinoids from the solution, leaving behind a refined version of the desired compound. This generally results in CBD solutions of 90% or more, with trace amounts of other cannabinoids.

Finally, full spectrum CBD generally refers to oils or other solutions that have been extracted from the hemp plant, but have not been distilled. As a result, full spectrum solutions contain the quantities of CBD, THC, and other cannabinoids that naturally occur in the hemp plant. Therefore, full spectrum CBD is not “pure” CBD, as no other compounds are removed to refine the end product. Full spectrum products are only legal to produce and sell in those states where cannabis is legal for recreational and/or medicinal use, like Colorado. This is due to the fact that full spectrum products can contain large amounts of THC.

Bulk CBD powder (CBD isolate), as well as CBD distillate and full spectrum CBD can be purchased through various retailers at wholesale prices. However, you may be wondering where you can source reliable, trustworthy vendors in such a tumultuous industry. So, let’s take a look at the best place to buy (or sell) CBD isolate and other CBD products.
